What To Wear For Your Family Photo Session | Buffalo, NY

So you’ve booked your photo session and you might now be wondering: what should everyone wear?  I get asked this by almost everyone I photograph and I’m happy to offer some advice to help you choose!  I know this can be tricky for some people and as I’m not hugely into fashion myself and an overthinker of everything, I get it.  But it doesn’t have to be a stressful part of family photos and, in fact, I think it can be kind of fun.  Here are some tips that I’ve found useful for families I have photographed:

1) Be comfortable

My first (and I think most important) piece of advice is to be comfortable. You don’t want to be constantly adjusting your outfit or wondering if it looks good. Wear something that you love and that makes you feel confident - but make sure you’re comfortable in it. Also, make sure it’s something that feels like “you” and it’s not something you wouldn’t ever normally wear. If you love dresses, wear one, but if you wouldn’t normally wear a dress, don’t feel like you have to wear one for your family photos. Pants and a cute top can look great as well. Again, comfort. So important.

2) Color Scheme

I also always tell families to choose colors that coordinate with and complement one another. But don’t wear matching outfits. Coordinating colors are very flattering and photograph beautifully. There are tons of examples if you google “coordinating color schemes for family photos.” This can be super helpful if you’re not sure where to start. Pick colors that catch your eye and that you’ll love looking at in your photos.

3) Patterns & Accessories

If you like patterns (I do!) I suggest having one person wear it and keep the rest of the outfits more neutral. If you have several people wearing patterns, they can be distracting in the photos. Layers and accessories can also add interest to photos! Flowy dresses or clothing also look beautiful on camera.

4) A Little “What Not To Wear”

I do always tell people to avoid the following so they are not distracting in your final images: extremely bright or fluorescent colors (these can create unflattering color casts on skin) and anything with large logos or letters.

I know it can be tough to get a whole family photo-ready. I hope these tips help a little and of course, you can always ask your photographer if you need help! Above all, be comfortable and confident. I will take care of the rest!
