Fine Art School Portraits
Buffalo, New York
Last October, I photographed my first school portraits and loved it so much that I wanted to share a little bit about it! These school portraits are different from the traditional school portrait we are all familiar with. My goal with these is to capture the child’s unique little personality and give families options to choose from, instead of only getting one photo of their child.
How are these different from traditional school portraits?
I photograph the child on a neutral, light background and instead of only taking one photograph, I spend a couple minutes with each child and take several poses. I strive to get natural smiles and even some funny faces. Childhood is so fleeting. I feel that capturing their authentic expressions and genuine personality is so important and I love being able to give families portraits of their child that they will be able to look back on as the years quickly go by.
How I work with kids
My priority is the child’s comfort. I will never force anything. Some kids are ready and willing to give me a variety of expressions and some are more reserved. Either is completely fine! I work with what the child gives me. I make them comfortable by getting down on their level, talking with them, and just generally being a little silly.
Why this is important to me
I have 3 young sons and every time I look at pictures of them, it shocks me how quickly they change. Even from the beginning of the school year to a few months into the year, their features subtly change. I also marvel at how quickly I forget little things they used to do and faces they used to make. With how busy life gets, it is easy to forget. For these reasons, I am passionate about giving families the ability to freeze those little moments and expressions that will soon be a thing of the past. With these simple, timeless portraits, the child takes center stage and is the focus of the image.
