My #1 Tip for a Successful Extended Family Photo Session
Extended family photos are such a special way to document multiple generations together, capturing the love, connection, and sometimes, the joyful chaos that comes with a big family group photo. Whether it’s grandparents, cousins, aunts, and uncles all coming together, these sessions are a wonderful opportunity to preserve family memories.
Moving on to the tip:
But if there’s one piece of advice I always give to families before our session, it’s this: Adults, resist the urge to stand behind me and try to get the kids to smile! I know it comes from a good place—everyone wants those sweet, happy expressions—but I promise you, it usually has the opposite effect.
Here’s what happens: when multiple people are calling a child’s name, making silly faces, or waving behind me, the kids get overstimulated and confused about where to look. Instead of smiling naturally, they’re darting their eyes in ten different directions, unsure of who to focus on. Some little ones even get overwhelmed and shy away from the camera altogether.
As the photographer, I have my own tried-and-true ways to engage kids and capture their natural joy—whether that’s through fun prompts, playful interaction, or simply giving them a moment to warm up. Trust me, keeping the energy relaxed and not overwhelming them with too many distractions makes all the difference in getting those beautiful, connected images you’re hoping for.
How to Keep Kids Happy and Focused During a Family Group Photo
So, what should you do instead? Simply relax and enjoy the moment! Let me take the lead, and if I ever need an extra hand to get a child’s attention, I’ll let you know. Extended family photos work best when everyone is at ease, focused on each other, and not worried about directing from behind the scenes. This way, we capture those genuine smiles, the laughter, and the little in-between moments that make your family group photo feel natural and timeless.
You’ve done the hard work of getting everyone together—now, just soak it all in, and I’ll handle the rest!
